Parenting Teens and Dating

If you are parenting teens and dating is part of their lives, you will find you need to set rules and regulations for your teens to follow. It doesn't matter if your teen is a young woman or a young man, rules are important when it comes to teens and dating.

The first rule that needs to be set when parenting teens that want to begin dating is the age at which that particular teen will be allowed to date. Not every teen is mature enough to begin dating at the same age. One teen may be ready to date sooner than another. You must know your teen in order to determine the best age to begin giving permission for dating.

Parenting teens and their dating can be quite challenging. You should let them begin dating by only going on double dates or group dates. They could be allowed to have a member of the opposite sex over at the house before real dating begins so that you can learn about the teens they are considering as appropriate dates. At first, make sure the teens are only in supervised situations until your teen has shown sufficient responsibility to make good, sound choices about things to do on dates and what actions are acceptable.

When parenting teens and dating is about to begin, you must sit down and have a frank discussion about premarital sex and the potential consequences. Discuss the values you and your family hold dear and explain the facts about pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and other facts your teen needs to know. Talk to them about date rape and the fact that some people might spike their drinks or food. Don't think they already know everything; they may know a lot but they may not have thought carefully about how this can impact their lives and their futures.

Also, you need to have a frank discussion with your teen that is about to begin dating about the use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. What do you want your teen to do if the person they are out with drinks alcohol or uses drugs? Do they know they can call you at any time of the day or night and request that you come get them to remove them from the situation? Does your teen know that you will thank them for the inconvenience instead of punishing them for calling you late at night? You need to express these feelings and let the teen know exactly what to do if this problem arises.

Parenting teens and dating challenges happen in the lives of every parent. You are not along; neither are your teens. You just need to communicate with them and set rules to be followed. Be open and talk freely to your teens. Let your teens talk openly to you about dating and situations that can arise.
